The Tampa Bay Area Great Books Council plans, organizes, and holds an annual "Great Books Winter Retreat/Conference" in the State of Florida. The first annual event was held in Brooksville, Florida in January 2006. The second annual event was held in January 2007 at the Hilton Longboat Key Beachfront Resort Hotel, just a few miles west of Sarasota. .

The Tampa Bay Great Books Council is pleased to announce its theme and reading selections for the third annual Tampa Bay/Florida Great Books Conference to be held in Longboat Key, Florida on January 18-20, 2008.
The conference theme will be
"Nineteenth-Century Russia: Lives in Conflict, Nation in Turmoil".

There are seven Great Books groups currently functioning in the Tampa Bay area:

GROUP I: Located at the Unviersity of South Florida in Tampa, as part of the Department of Contining Education and the Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI). Since January 2003, this group has met on Friday mornings for eight-week sessions, from 10 A.M. to noon. The next session will begin on September 28, 2007 and the text to be used will be SERIES FOUR of the Great Books Reading and Discussion Program. Group II: Located at the University of South Florida in Tampa, as part of the Department of Continuing Education and the Osher Life-Long Learning Institute (OLLI). Since January 2003, this group has met on Friday afternoons for eight-week sessions, from 1:30 to 3:30 P.M. The next session will begin on September 28, 2007 and the text to be used will be GREAT CONVERSATIONS III. Group III: Located at the Temple Terrace Library, 202 Bullard Parkway, in Tampa (813-989-7160), this group meets on the last Saturday afternoon of each month, from 1 to 2:30 P.M. The group began in October of 2000 and has met continously ever since, but does not hold meetings during the months of August or December. GROUP VI Located at The Clearwater Library, at 100 North Osceloa Avenue, in Clearwater, holds a Great Books discussion group on the SECOND THURSDAY of each month from 1:30 to 3:30 P.M.

GROUP VII: The Great Books Discussion Group at the South Shore Library, 15810 Beth Shields Way, in Ruskin, meets on the FIRST SATURDAY of each month, from 10:30 A.M. to 12 noon.
