The Aesthetic Dialogue

Art as Experienceby John Dewey
Blue Arabesque by Patricia Hampl
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce

Start with a classic American philosopher, John Dewey. His seminal work on aesthetics, Art as Experience, has garnered an international reputation as "the most distinguished work ever written by an American on the formal structure and characteristic effects of all the arts." We then proceed to Patricia Hampl's Blue Arabesque: A Search for the Sublime. A contemporary master of the memoir, Hampl renders a paean to the art of seeing in her meditations on Henri Matisse and Katherine Mansfield, celebrating our capacity to be transformed by art, recognizing the experience as holy. Finally, we explore one of the more significant works of twentieth century literature, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. All three revel in the aesthetic experience.
