Mission Statement
The Great Books Council of Ontario (affiliated with the Great Books Foundation in Chicago) provides opportunities for people of all ages to discuss, ponder, question, and analyze the meaning of great books using the shared inquiry method of reading and discussion. We are for people who love to read, think, and talk about great ideas and who find pleasure in spending time with others who share that joy. We believe that a group of readers, sharing their understanding of a stimulating work of literature or philosophy in a well-conducted discussion, can reach a level of insight rarely achieved by those who read alone.
We help establish new Great Books discussion groups for adults. We direct adults interested in joining a group to one seeking new members. We offer leader training to new and established groups. We hold periodic Toronto-based and regional events open to the public. We promote use of voluntary Junior Great Books Programs in the schools.
