Long Island Great Books Council

What is the Long Island Great Books Council?

The Long Island Great Books Council (LIGBC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1954 and dedicated to fostering discussion of great literature on Long Island. In addition to running training courses for book discussion leaders, LIGBC sponsors an annual one-day Spring Institute that draws people from all over Long Island for a full day of discussion.

LIGBC is guided by six Directors with links to local discussion groups all over Long Island:

• Grahme Fischer (Commack group), President of LIGBC, is an engineer and lifelong member of Great Books discussion groups. Contact: longisland@greatbooksdiscussionprograms.org
• Arlene Stock is a corporate management specialist and flautist.
• Chuck Ferrara (Islip group) is a retired management development expert, and a poet and bonsai artist.
• June Ferrara (Islip group) is a retired art teacher and a potter.
• Curt Boddie (Port Washington group) is a high school mathematics teacher.
• Kemp Randolph (Port Washington group) is a physicist.
