Our junior program is organized to allow accompanying adults to attend
the morning discussions and lunch and then join their junior participant(s)
for the rest of the day and evening. In the mornings (Monday through Saturday),
counselors take the juniors to the pool and other physical activities and
accompany them through the lunch line.
At 1 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the juniors will have
an hour discussion of the junior books*. Depending on the number of participants
in the group, there will be one or two discussion groups. Last year we had all
of the juniors together. It worked beautifully, as it has done in past years when
we had the junior program. Since some attendees want to take the bus trip, we are
not having a junior discussion that afternoon.
The evening programs are available for all to attend. There is a junior great books
arts and crafts room near the dorm rooms which we have furnished with some supplies.
We encourage juniors to bring their own favorite arts and crafts and sports items,
like tennis rackets, swim suits, etc. Colby has a waterfront property at a nearby
lake for visitors to use.
We join as a community for the opening night orientation get together to a movie on
Wednesday, the talent show (strictly voluntary - but juniors are encouraged to
participate as a group) on Thursday evening, and a lobster bake on Friday.
* This year's junior books are:
A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park
Yolonda's Genius by Carol Fenner
The View from Saturday by E. L. Konigsburg
Hope this helps to explain the program in further detail.
